Wildlife Around Your Cabin

If you own a log cabin, you’ll almost definitely need to deal with animals of all kinds. Bugs and other critters can be commonplace, but there are several famous remedies to deal with them.

But what about bigger animals like deer, racoons or even bears? If you’re sick of mammals entering your property, eating your plants or causing a disturbance, here are some tips for making sure that they don’t ruin your property.

Employ sound

It’s a fact that most animals are more scared of you than you are of them. To put this into practice, it’s a good idea to make sure that your presence is known aroud your cabin.

One of the best ways of doing this is sound. Make sure that you have conversations out on the veranda, and feel free to make them noisy (as long as your neighbors don’t mind!).

Or, you could even install radios around your cabin and keep it on a talk show.

Use strong smells

Smell repels many animals, including deer. If you can make your cabin smell, you might be able to keep creatures at bay.

Of course, you can use pleasant smells that you’ll like! A popular method is to plant spices. However, by doing this you could encourage other animals to eat them.

If you don’t want to grow vegetables, you could hang something with a strong smell around your garden. It doesn’t need to be a bad smell – a  popular method is finding particuarly pungent but wonderful smelling soaps!

Install lights

Deer don’t really like light, instead choosing to graze at night. So, you could install some lights to make them think that it’s the daytime.

If you choose motion-activated lights, they will come on whenever they detect an animal close to your property, so they will be less likely to approach.
