Renovating an old home or another type of dwelling can be an exciting project. You invest a significant amount of time, labor, money and commitment to your project, and at the end, you hope to have a finished home you can be proud of. If you’re considering renovating a home and want to re-create it to have a log-cabin feel, then TruLog™ steel log siding may be the right option for you.
The James Smith Farmhouse in Detroit
Renovation projects run the gamut in terms of complexity. Consider the extreme end of the spectrum. There is a log cabin hidden away in a Detroit suburb, and the city is hoping someone will want to purchase and restore it.
A recent Detroit Free Press article tells the story of an old cabin located on the west side of Detroit. But you wouldn’t know the house was a cabin just from looking at it: the article says it’s been sided with vinyl, which covers a layer of insulation, which in turn covers a layer of wood siding. Only beneath the last layer do the log bones of the cabin lie.
The exact history of the cabin is not crystal clear. The city believes it may have been built as long ago as the 1830s, or anytime between that date and 1850. A pioneer named James Smith seems to have been the original owner and to have farmed there for much of his life, according to the Detroit Free Press. After changing hands throughout the decades, the cabin went into foreclosure and is now owned by an entity known as the Detroit Land Bank Authority. The home is abandoned and in a bad state of disrepair, according to the article. Only time will tell whether a special buyer will purchase the home at auction and restore it.
Your Renovation Project
With TruLog™, you don’t have to worry about maintaining real logs, but you still get a log-style cabin. TruLog™ siding is designed to look just like real logs.
When you put a lot of time into a renovation or restoration, you might start thinking about the longevity of the home. While logs have proven to last generations, they eventually rot and fall apart if left to themselves. Our steel siding product also lasts for decades, but you don’t have to perform any maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape. The steel is not susceptible to moisture damage, rot, termites and other problems associated with logs.
