One Green Getaway

There are countless off-grid retreats, but one of the most interesting is a tiny cabin on an island 20 miles off the Maine coast that was detailed in a Dwell magazine article.

The cabin was built by a retired journalism professor and his daughter, who happens to be an architectural designer. He desired a modestly scaled home that would blend with its surroundings, use local materials when possible, and be largely self-sustaining.

The cabin is powered by solar panels and features an on-demand water heater and an innovative composting toilet. Water is provided through a cistern-based catchment system that collects and filters rainwater.

Go Green with TruLog

As the owners, architects, and builders behind the Maine cabin knew, traditional log cabins have their charms but they can also be costly to live in and maintain. An increasing number of people who desire the experience and aesthetics of a log home without the expenses and maintenance worries have turned to log-like siding such as TruLog.

TruLog’s steel siding panels are contoured and textured to resemble authentic logs, and they are backed by foam panels that provide enhanced insulation and improved energy efficiency. The rugged exterior protects against pests and the elements, and unlike log cabins, it requires no chemical treatments.

In fact, TruLog is truly maintenance-free, and it can be easily cleaned with a rinse from a regular garden hose. The steel is also 100 percent recyclable and made of partially recycled materials, which reduces its carbon footprint and makes it easy to reprocess should you eventually decide to change your cabin’s exterior.
