Fall Log Maintenance

If you have a log cabin in America – or are thinking of buying one – it is a good idea to ensure that you are fully clued up regarding how to maintain it. This article has a few tips on how to keep your log cabin in tip-top condition!

Survey the home once a year

It is a good idea to survey the home once per year fully. Go through the rooms and keep an eye out for anything that could cause you a problem. In particular, look out for:

  • Faded or discolored logs
  • Moss growing anywhere outside or inside
  • Mud tubes made by termites
  • Gaps that animals may hide in
  • Cracks that face upwards

Clean the exterior

Make sure that you clean the exterior of your log home once or twice a year. You don’t need any special cleaning products to do this – a gentle soap is adequate. If you clean your home regularly, it could eliminate the possibility of needing to do more expensive repairs further down the line.

Remove mold and mildew

Mold and mildew can build up in log homes and can eventually cause more significant problems. To avoid these problems, you can use a specific cleaning product to get rid of mold and mildew every few months.

Test when your log home needs a new stain

A stain is an integral part of protecting your log home. However, you shouldn’t apply a new coat of stain if it doesn’t need one – this can just make the walls become thicker and could cause them more damage.

Assess whether you need a new stain by analyzing the current one, especially after heavy rainfall. See if it peels away – if it does, it might be time to apply another coat.
